The zoom link to access the webinar is sent on the email registered at the time of registration and in a reminder email sent by the CPRLV two days before the event. It is also recommended to check if it is not in the junk mail.
This webinar focuses on the rise of the far right in North America and its contemporary manifestations. It will first discuss the difficulties of defining the far right as well as the heterogeneity of associated movements. The webinar also addresses some historical comparisons with far-right movements in order to examine some of the similarities and differences with the contemporary far right.
Although the far right is fragmented, it is still possible to identify some common themes among these movements. Themes such as an exacerbated nationalism, the rejection of modernity, the influence of traditional values and roles, and a defense of so-called « natural » hierarchies are shared by several far-right groups. Following this discussion, it is possible to identify certain factors that can explain this upsurge, without naming a single cause. In particular, we can observe a normalization of extreme right-wing discourse through a recuperation of international and national issues, as well as a trivialization of ideas and groups previously recognized as radical. The contemporary context has thus become a fertile ground for the persistence and propagation of these movements and ideas.
