Conference: Quasi-Religiosity in Contemporary Society (KANR)

The Korean Academy of New Religions(KANR) annual international conference (virtual event presented in English)

Conference Theme:  Quasi-Religiosity in Contemporary Society

Quasi-religions can be defined as movements or organized events that share some traits of religions but are not clearly classified as religious.  This annual conference will explore the distinctions between quasi-religious and religious phenomena, especially in regard to new religions.  In particular we wish to explore how some social movements develop into new religions, while others do not.  The organizers encourage submissions on a wide variety of topics, including politic, economic, social, media, sports, and technological issues.  What elements, for instance, does blockchain technology or environmentalism share with organized religion?  Is transhumanism a full-blown religious system?  And how do fanatic fans resemble religious devotees?  The organizers welcome explorations using any methodological approaches, including ethnographic, textual, theoretical and ritual studies.
