Synopsis: Kamila Dydyna’s, Debutante, is an exceptional short film exploring the female experience within the highly male-controlled Jehovah’s Witness culture. It expertly demonstrates shunning through a family divided by religion. A young woman, Meg, gets put on trial for what they deem a sin. She navigates her relationship with her boyfriend, father, and mother as she’s subjected to interrogation by three male elders during a ‘judicial committee’ with the highest stakes. The cringe, frustration, and anger she feels never fail to evoke strong emotions.
